The Power of Positivity

The other day I pulled the Four of Wands tarot card for myself. It’s the card of completion - congratulations for a job well done. A card that tells the receiver it’s time to sit back, celebrate, and reap the rewards of your hard work.

My first instinct was to think this card must have been meant for someone else, because my to-do list feels miles long and there are some big projects in my very near future that I’m only just getting started on.

Then I took a moment and thought - wow, thank you. I needed to hear this. Yes, I have come so far. Why not take a moment to celebrate?

Ten years ago I was only dreaming of becoming an acupuncturist. I was working long days in a corporate setting, focusing on deadline after deadline. The Four of Wands card drew my attention to all of the amazing things I’ve achieved in the last decade of my life.

In treatments, I often remind my clients to recognize the progress of their healing journey, and put a softer gaze on their pain. It’s easy to fixate on what hasn’t changed yet and overlook how far we’ve already come - without realizing that healing is already happening.

Sometimes we simply need to pause and reflect on what’s working, what feels aligned, and what supports the outcome we desire. I truly believe in the power of positivity: how you think shapes how you feel, how you feel becomes emotion, that emotion carries a vibration, and that vibration influences what you attract (or repel) in your life.

The power of positivity

The power of positivity is the idea that your inner state - your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs - influences how you experience life. When you choose a more hopeful, grounded mindset, you often notice improvements in your mental health, your relationships, and your overall sense of fulfillment. It’s not about pretending everything is perfect. It’s about choosing how you relate to what’s in front of you.

Positive energy refers to that uplifting, encouraging presence we all recognize. It shows up as kindness, generosity, empathy, calm, optimism, even quiet enthusiasm. And people naturally gravitate toward it because it feels safe and welcoming - it feels good to be around someone who carries that kind of energy.

On the flip side, when we’re operating from a more negative space, everything can feel heavier. We’ve all had those “off” days when we feel drained, tense, discouraged, or unsettled. Just like positive energy, those states influence how we interpret situations and how we show up in our relationships. The world can start to mirror back the tension we’re holding.

The power of positivity shows up across many disciplines, not just the wellness community, including psychology, philosophy, and medicine - there are variations in language, but they share a similar core message: when you cultivate a more optimistic inner state, there is a ripple effect on your health. Feeling positive nourishes your mental, physical, and emotional well-being, and that influences the overall quality of your life.

A few big ideas that have helped shape this movement:

  • The Law of Attraction, which became popular in the 19th century, is built on the belief that “like attracts like” - that our thoughts and emotions help draw similar experiences into our lives.

  • The Law of Resonance expands on this, suggesting that everything, including our thoughts and feelings, carries a vibrational quality, and when similar frequencies meet, they amplify each other - which is why practices like visualization and aligned action are emphasized.

  • Raising Your Frequency, an idea in wellness practices that a regulated, healthy body operates at a more harmonious state, while chronic stress and emotional trauma can create imbalance.

  • Manifesting, which came into mainstream consciousness in the early 2000s brings these ideas into everyday language: focused intention, belief, and emotions influences our behavior and creates aligned results.

  • Even concepts from quantum physics, like the Nobel Prize–winning work on Quantum Entanglement by Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger, are often referenced metaphorically in wellness philosophy to reflect the deeper idea of interconnectedness - that at some level, everything is connected.

Emotional energy is contagious - it can foster a healthy, supportive relationship or create one that is filled with tension and resentment. Positive energy enhances well-being, eases anxiety, and improves communication. Negative energy, often fuels conflict, defensiveness, and emotional distance.

It’s helpful to be aware of both the energy you put out and the energy you receive. If you pay closer attention to how others respond to you, you can re-evaluate how you show up in your life. And if you better understand how people’e energies affect you, you can do a better job of matching, receiving or blocking the energy around you.

While most people would not try to cultivate negative energy, it is often a by-product of a busy world where chronic stress can activate the body’s fight-or-flight response, releasing adrenaline and cortisol. While this response was essential for our ancestors to stay alive, today’s non-physical stresses (like work or money) can lead to unhealthy feelings of stress and negativity.

Common signs of prolonged negative energy may include:

  • Restlessness

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Nervousness

  • Headaches or stomach discomfort

  • Muscle tension

  • Fatigue

  • Mood swings

  • Anxiety or low mood

It’s difficult to cultivate positive energy when you feel emotionally or physically depleted. The more grounded and at peace you are within yourself, the more naturally balanced and supportive your energy becomes.

Set your intentions

Intentional alignment starts with visualizing and emotionally connecting with the success, relationships, health, or abundance you wish to experience. Journaling can help identify patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior that shape your current “vibration.”

  • Where is your energy now?

  • Where would you like it to be?

  • Who are you surrounded by — and who do you want in your life?

  • What does your current work, housing, and financial situation look like?

  • What would your ideal reality feel like?

Align your present decisions with your future self

After you’ve defined your energetic goals, start to orient your daily actions, habits, and mindset in that direction.

Here are some ways to shift your internal state toward positivity and balance to help align your energy with your intentions:

  1. Surround yourself with uplifting people
Nurture relationships with positive influences - those who inspire you or reflect qualities you’d like to cultivate in yourself. Build a community that resonates with your intentions, fostering collaboration, harmony, and mutual support.

  2. Regulate your nervous system to balance your energy
Calm your mind and release tension with guided meditation or moving practices like walking, Qi Gong, or yoga. Practice daily gratitude by reflecting each night on three things you’re thankful for and one thing you’re looking forward to tomorrow. Strengthen your reflective or spiritual practice through journaling, prayer, time in nature, or astrology to create awareness, grounding, and alignment.

  3. Seek energy-healing therapies
Use practices that help correct imbalances, reduce stress, and support overall wellness. Examples include:

  • Acupuncture

  • Reiki

  • Massage

  • Facials

  • Sound therapy

  1. Increase joy to shift your mood
Prioritize activities that lift your spirit: spend time with community, engage in creative expression, move your body in enjoyable ways, and make space for play. Music is one of the fastest ways to shift energy - create a playlist of songs that boosts your mood and makes you feel good.

  2. Clean up your inputs to support emotional frequency
What you consume physically and mentally shapes your energy. Reduce stimulants, inflammatory foods, and negative or overstimulating media. Add supportive habits like whole foods, adequate water, quality sleep, and sunlight. These habits nourish your body, calm your nervous system, and promote positive energy.

  3. Embrace compassion and kindness
Kindness strengthens relationships, improves health, and generates a positive feedback loop - the more you give, the more good feelings return. Express compassion by volunteering, spending time with different generations, or simply connecting with neighbors or strangers.

  4. Create environmental resonance
The energy of your surroundings affects your own vibration. Maintain a positive environment by decluttering and adding elements that evoke joy - this will create a living space that allows you feel more balanced and at ease.

The benefits of aligning your energy

You may start to notice a shift in your energy after adding even one of these practices to your daily life. As you notice the positive shift, acknowledge it and say thank you so that you will be open to receiving even more of them in your life.

Here’s some of the benefits you may notice:

  1. Your nervous system is more regulated - when you’re calm and hopeful, your brain:

  • Spots opportunities

  • Sees solutions

  • Notices supportive people

  • Feels less threatened

2. Create better outcomes - when you feel grounded, you:

  • Communicate more clearly

  • Set better boundaries

  • Take healthier risks

  • Respond instead of react

  • Follow through

3. People respond to your presence - positivity tends to look like:

  • Steady

  • Warm

  • Confident

  • Emotionally safe

That often attracts:

  • Better relationships

  • More respect

  • Healthier opportunities

4. You become less available for negativity - as your internal stability increases, you:

  • Tolerate less drama

  • Stop chasing validation

  • Break repeating patterns

  • Protect your time and energy

Conclusion

Positivity is about becoming internally aligned with the kind of life you want - and then living and acting like its happening. This works best when you take the actions of changing both your inner state and your situation to bring you closer toward your goals and desired outcomes.

Finding resonance with what you desire doesn’t happen overnight. It takes patience, trust, and allowing things to unfold in their own time. The journey may feel difficult at times, but it’s well worth the effort. Nothing about you is fixed - everything can shift. Energy never disappears; it simply changes form.
